If you’re new to Photoshop, you may need to experiment with the different Photoshop tools for yourself to get a good feel for what they do. Also, layers aren’t available for Windows versions of Photoshop CS4 and earlier. So, in this chapter, I assume you’re working in Photoshop CS6.
Taking a look at the basic features of a layer
A layer is a tool in Photoshop that enables you to manipulate images. Layers are very important in the editing of images, because they allow you to change the appearance of an image without affecting the other elements in the image (such as backgrounds or other images). You can make and edit multiple layers without showing the final results.
To create a layer, open the Create a new layer dialog box from the Layers palette (refer to Figure 7-2). Choose the appropriate tool or create a new layer by clicking the New Layer icon and setting the number of layers you want in the image. You can change the layers displayed on the Canvas when you create them (in fact, you’re not allowed to change the visibility of a layer unless you save the image).

To edit or modify a layer, open the Layers palette and select the layer you want to edit, as shown in Figure 7-3.

They have been developing a parachuting based transport system (Zipline) to provide emergency medical care at a low cost in the remote areas of the Caribbean.
The Zipline can be operated with the aid of a motorbike or a Cessna plane. It consists of two main components, a parachute and a motorbike. The motorbike provides the propulsion and the parachute provides the lift. The key feature of the system is the ability to reach remote areas where there is no access to roads.
Zipline is currently operating in the Cordillera region in the Philippines, where it has been transporting people using its parachutes. However, the Zipline’s main aim is to offer emergency medical care in Haiti.
Zipline has already received a US$3.8 million loan to assist it in raising an additional US$14.6 million more to bring the total investment to US$17.5 million. The company hopes to raise the remaining funds through private investors in the US, Italy and the UK.
