Keep the following points in mind when you use Photoshop. _Think_ through the process of doing what you will be doing. _Think_ of how it will all come together later. _Think_ about what the final result should look like. And, of course, _think_ about what will be on the screen as you work.
* **Color Use**
Color itself can be a powerful tool in Photoshop. The choices of colors you choose for an image can greatly enhance and modify the look of a final printed image. However, Photoshop uses variations of all the colors in a specific image space, or the color gamut. For example, the version of Photoshop I’m using here, Photoshop CS6, provides these color spaces: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key, and Black. I can bring up these color spaces by clicking on the Color menu (Figure 3.1) and then clicking the Step Backward button (a small arrow).

For the purposes of this book, we’ll assume that images are color balanced for their intended output. That is, we won’t worry about getting the colors just right, but we will use it as a reminder to remember what we are working with.
* **Workflow**
Photoshop provides a familiar workflow that has worked for many years. For example, you can make a duplicate layer and use the Clone Stamp tool to pull objects or areas off of the original. You can blur, sharpen, and adjust contrast and brightness. And, of course, there is the option to Save For Web and Export.
Because Photoshop is based on layers, it’s a bit more complex than most other image editing tools. Let’s examine how layers work in Photoshop and where they come from.
* **Layers and Backgrounds**
If you create or open a new image in Photoshop, by default it will have a blank canvas. This image can have no layers, and no background. However, you can always add a background behind your image by choosing Select>Layer and pressing the Backspace key to clear any background or type any text. The easiest way to add a background is to first add a new color layer, and then use the Eraser tool to remove the color from the background. Another way to add a background is to press the Background Color button at the bottom of the Tools panel (

Photoshop is a vector editing and graphics editing program. Elements is a raster editor. Elements has many of the same editing tools as Photoshop, but not all of them.
Sketchbook
Photoshop’s Sketchbook tool allows you to create and edit “painting” layers. It’s a simple, multi-resolution tool. You can then use the Paintbrush tool to edit the layers like any other layer.
Photoshop Elements doesn’t offer the Paintbrush, Pen, or Vector Paint tools, but it has the Paintbrush Marker, Brush, and paint tools that you find on vector layers in Elements. The Layer Mask and Pathfinder tools also work on vector layers.
Photoshop allows layers and layer masks to be used at the same time. The Paint and Brush tools allow you to edit vector layers and layer masks at the same time.
Masks
In Photoshop, you can create, edit, and delete masks. Masks allow you to hide and reveal parts of an image. Masks are used to create effects.
If you want to apply a Gradient in Photoshop, you’ll need the Gradient tool. If you want to apply a Warp, you’ll need to use the Gradient Mesh Filter and Warp tools.
Elements doesn’t have Gradient or Warp filters. However, it does have the Gradient Mesh filter, which lets you apply a gradient to a photo.
Photoshop does not have a Mask tool. You can create and edit layer masks, but you cannot delete them. You’ll need to use the Selection tool to erase a portion of the image.

Q:
Web App to run on client’s server and access EC2 from local machine
I have an application written in ASP.NET that I would like to run on the client’s local machine. It’s more or less a desktop application (is that correct?). The client wants to access it from his phone, so he needs to run it as a web app.
My question is: can I setup an EC2 instance with IIS running on it and can the client access the instance from his local machine?
The reason I would like to do this is so that he can run it directly from his phone, without having to install a visual studio and build for his phone. I’m just worried that what I’m suggesting is a terrible idea.

It’s not a terrible idea at all. You just need to make sure that the client’s phone has internet access to your server that they are trying to access. And if they want to be able to edit the application when it’s running they will need something more than just a browser and a regular phone. You might want to look into AirPlay, which allows the client to interact with the application directly using their iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad.
Alternately, if they really want to be able to edit the application, they can install the free Google App Engine SDK for Python and run a web server on their machine that will allow them to edit files. They can just upload a new version of the application whenever they want to update it. You can also get access to this through WebAPI, which I believe is free.

it’s getting people who are new to Rails interested
in working on Rails is a good thing. I just wish that it weren’t that Rubyist
people also chose Ruby as a language and an environment, because that’s not
where they feel comfortable, and a lot of those people end up writing code in
perl, I’ve witnessed it.
Edit: I’m not trying to imply that the Ruby developer community has no right
to also have some people who are new to Ruby. I’m just pointing out that
because there are (or perhaps some perceived to be) more Rubyist, inexperienced
Rails developers is not a win for the Ruby community.

I said that the _majority_ of people who are comfortable with rails would be
Rubyists. I wasn’t talking about the language or even the environment, just
