I would like to receive even more updates, because I am very happy with the way Lightroom works, and some of the new features could really finalise that feeling that it is a great program. Speaking of updates, there are two major ones available today. First the Import Process has been improved, with one of the major resolution changes being the ability to import ProRes, DigiBeta and Redcode (RED’s HD 4:2:2 codec). Both Avid and RED offer their own RAW codecs, and are often different from the CRW and ARW RAW formats, so I was waiting for this. The next update takes all the new features into Photoshop CC and brings them to the Mac. It is good to see that we are only a few weeks from the official launch of Photoshop CC. The new Photoshop CC emphasizes speed and efficiency in the Import and Export processes. Those improvements can also be expected in Lightroom 2.6, which should be arriving sometime this month.

Photoshop’s powerful and feature rich, but I often wondered about its thumbnail viewer. For instance, when I was using Photoshop 5 or 6, I might be making some changes to my image, and I quickly need to view it again. Photoshop had a built-in thumbnail viewer that would just show a preview of the image file. In more recent versions of Photoshop, the file path and everything within the window of the thumbnail viewer would be updated, but the tool simply didn’t respond to my clicks. This is the type of thing I would be concerned with when I’m bouncing from point to point in the actual Photoshop program. Now, I can click at the top of the viewer to open the full sized file, but I can also choose to have it open at 100% or 200%. This way I can get a quick look at the changes that were just made to my image file and bounce around the screen freely. In addition to being able to adjust the stage, full screen, and view the image, I can easily take a peek at the information that has been recorded in the layers, in the Layers panel. I can even make a quick adjustment to that portion of the image and re-open it in the same way.

The Pen tool can be used with any layer, but when it’s used with a layer that already contains a photo (like a photo layer), the Pen tool works like the Brush tool — or any other eraser tool — and erases any areas inside the layer that are covered by the photo.
